WAHPETON, NORTH DAKOTA – An unidentified 12-year-old female student was found dead on Tuesday evening, February 6, 2018, at the Circle of Nations School in Wahpeton, North Dakota.
Due to the investigation, Circle of Nations is unable to offer additional details, according to a release issued by campus officials. Circle of Nations thanks the public for its understanding and support of the school community.
The Wahpeton police say the death is still under investigation. The chief of police, Scott Thorsteinson, told a local newpaper that the death was not of natural causes.
“It’s difficult for all of us to face the death of a young person,” Circle of Nations stated in a release. “During crisis situations such as this, providing support to our students and staff is our primary priority. We have brought in counselors to provide grief support to those in need.”
Circle of Nations is an inter-tribal off-reservation boarding school, chartered under the Sisseton-Wahpeton Dakota Oyate and funded by the Bureau of Indian Education. Circle of Nations School serves American Indian youth in grades 4 through 8, according to the school’s webpage.
