Acid spills at water treatment plant in Fort Lauderdale

Several gallons of acid have spilled at a water treatment plant in Fort Lauderdale, causing nearby areas to evacuate, officials said.

A spokesman for the Fort Lauderdale Fire Department said hydrochloride spilled just before 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the plant in the 1500 block of South State Road 7.

Authorities advise people to avoid the area. A hazardous materials team is headed to the scene.

This is a developing story.
