Deputies investigate fatal Pompano Beach shooting

The Broward Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal shooting that took place Thursday in Pompano Beach.

Deputies got a call at about 7:30 p.m. regarding shots being fired at 220 Northwest 15th Place.

According to deputies, 46-year-old Trevor Mitchell was grilling when he was shot and killed. He was pronounced dead on scene.

A witness told Local 10 that Mitchell got into an altercation with someone at the cookout and that's when he was shot and killed.

The witness told Local 10's Louis Aguirre the shooter emptied the entire clip into the victim, then reloaded the gun and shot a second clip into the man before taking off in a pickup that was driven by someone else.

About an hour after the shooting, deputies say the suspect was involved in a minor crash with a different car on I-95 near Davie Blvd, which led to a standoff with law enforcement officers. Eventually, the suspect was coaxed out of his car and taken into custody.

According to deputies, a shot was fired during the standoff, but it was not directed at law enforcement officers.

The identity of the suspect has not been released.
