Men ages 91, 79, killed by Tri-Rail train in Pompano Beach

Two men died Sunday morning in Pompano Beach when their car was struck by a Tri-Rail train as they were crossing the tracks, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.

William H. Richards, 91, and Richard A. Leftingwell, 79, were in the 1400 block of West Atlantic Boulevard when the incident took place at about 9:27 a.m.

Richards was driving eastbound on West Atlantic Boulevard in the center lane inside a white four-door 2012 Hyundai when he was struck by the northbound commuter train.

The Tri-Rail train was traveling at 79 mph at the time of the crash, deputies said.

Both men died at the scene.

No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
