RED LAKE INDIAN RESERVATION – On Wednesday thru Saturday, September 13 to 16, 2017, scores of tribal members and others from around the region will gather at Red Lake Nation Tribal College in Red Lake to learn how to gather and grow indigenous foods.
Organizers from 4-Directions Development, Inc. hope the event will spur momentum of a movement among Red Lakers, American Indians and yes, non-Indians, growing interest in returning to the food of our ancestors – what they grew, hunted and gathered.
Up until relatively recently, perhaps the last hundred years, ALL human beings had been used to a more local organic type of food, and because we have deviated from that path, we see a lot of the health problems that our grandparents and great-grand parents did not have to deal with. Our life may be easier, but is it healthier?
Subjects to be covered at the summit include; soil health and nutrient management, decolonizing the diet, agriculture as business, animal farming, bee keeping, and several food demonstrations on smoked fish, maple sugar, wild rice, corn, natural teas, canning, and snaring. (Agenda attached)
Entertainment has been scheduled for Friday evening. This is a FREE event, all are welcome to come and hear Corey Medina & Brothers performing at the Red Lake Powwow Grounds in Red Lake. Review attachment for event details.
