A 23-year veteran officer with the Miami Police Department and his wife were seriously injured in a head-on motorcycle crash with someone who was driving under the influence of alcohol and methamphetamines, the department said.

Police said Det. Antonio "Tony" Torres and his wife were taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center to undergo life-saving surgeries.

Torres has been listed in serious but stable condition and is scheduled for additional surgery later this week, while his wife is listed in stable condition. She remains hospitalized.

The Police Department said it is supporting the Torres family spiritually, morally and financially and added that anyone in the community is welcome to make monetary donations to the Police Officer Assistance Trust.
