Stolen car pulled out of water on Rockland Key

A car that was stolen overnight in Stock Island was pulled from the water Monday near the intersection of Riviera and Puerta drives on Rockland Key, Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin said.

According to Herrin, authorities received a call at 5:30 a.m. from a resident who said he saw two or three young men running away from the scene after driving an orange Dodge Charger into the water.

After making sure that no one was inside the vehicle, deputies called for a tow truck to remove it from the water, Herrin said.

The owner of the car told deputies that she forgot to remove her keys from inside the vehicle the night before.

She said she last saw her 2011 Charger at about 11 p.m. Sunday and didn't notice that it had been stolen until she woke up Monday morning.

Herrin said the men involved in the theft are believed to be in their 20s.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 305-292-7060 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-346-TIPS.
