WASHINGTON – The Pentagon reported the United States dropped the largest non-nuclear weapon for the first time ever in combat in a strike intended for Islamic State targets in Afghanistan.
The GBU-43 bomb is dubbed the “mother of all bombs.” The strike involved the largest bomb since World War II.
The bomb was dropped from an aircraft at 7:32 p.m. local time in Nangarhar province, Defense Department spokesperson Adam Stump said.
