12 killed in Texas church vehicle crash

The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed 12 people were killed and three others injured Wednesday in a crash involving a group of church seniors near San Antonio, Texas.

The head-on crash between a pickup truck and a small van happened on Highway 83 near Garner State Park in Concan, Texas, KSAT-TV reported.

All lanes of the highway were closed in the area, officials said.

Church officials said the group was returning to New Braunfels from a Baptist encampment near Leakey, Texas, where they were attending a retreat.

KSAT said a van and a truck collided head-on. Video also showed two hearses on the scene. Damage was spread over an area of at least 30 feet wide.

According to a Facebook post, the church was the First Baptist New Braunfels church of New Braunfels, Texas.

“We have received word that the bus carrying our senior adults back from their retreat was involved in an accident. We understand there have been some fatalities,” the post said. “All activities for tonight are cancelled, including dinner. The Sanctuary will be open this evening for prayer and support. Please be in prayer for all involved.”
