WASHINGTON – One of the highlights of the 2016 White House Tribal Nations conference when President Barack Obama was presented with a blanket and a hat. The President, who resists wearing caps or helmets presented to him by championship sports teams, donned the hat that National Congress of American Indians President and Chairman of the Swinomish Tribe Brian Cladoosby put on him for several seconds. The video captures President Obama wearing it and a huge smile on his face.

“What an amazing honor, and what a kind gesture for the honor song and the blanket and the hat,” President Obama said to tribal leaders.  “I have to say I’m also very glad that you also have a blanket for Michelle so she doesn’t steal mine. She would, too. I’m just saying.”

This week on This Week, three big tribal nations stories:

  • The 2016 White House Tribal Nations Conference
  • The Settlements: more than a century of claims
  • The Schools: the Navajo Nation takes steps to take greater control of education
