SAN JOSE—Eighteen-year-old Ashton Locklear, a tribal citizen of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, has been named as a replacement to the U.S. Olympic team.
While Locklear performed well on Sunday night at the Olympic gymnastic trials in San Jose, she fell short of making the official U.S. Olympic Gymnastic team.
As a replacement, Locklear will be a non-competing alternative to the Summer Games in Rio de Janero, Brazil. It is possible she could compete if one of the athletes is injured or becomes ill. She will continue to train as if she made the team.
Her parents are Terry and Carrie Locklear. Her father is a self-employed construction worker and her mother is a registered nurse. The family lives in Hamlet, North Carolina, about 90 miles southeast of Charlotte.
