OAKS, OKLAHOMA – Cherokee Nation Businesses and Cherokee Nation recently made a big impression on local students. Employee volunteers from the tribe and its business arm celebrated Read Across America Day by bringing their favorite childhood books to local classrooms.

CNB’s annual partnership with Oaks Mission Elementary brought a day full of stories and surprises to students in pre-K through sixth grade. Students were excited to see a few familiar faces, including returning volunteers and the Tooth Fairy, as well as Emmy Award-winning broadcast journalist and host of “Osiyo, Voices of the Cherokee People,” Jennifer Loren.

“I’ve been reading to the kids at Oaks for several years. I always look forward to it,” said Courtney Pendergraft, a dental hygienist at Cherokee Nation W.W. Hastings Hospital, who dressed as the Tooth Fairy and handed out new toothbrushes after she read. “Today is really exciting because I get to focus on and encourage two of my favorite things, good reading habits and good oral hygiene.”

Every year on or around Dr. Seuss’ birthday, CNB employee volunteers honor the beloved children’s author and participate in the nationwide reading celebration in hopes of increasing student achievement and reading ability.

This year marks the 19th annual Read Across America event. Schools, libraries and community centers across the country celebrated by bringing together volunteers, kids and books to highlight the importance of developing a love for reading at an early age.

Read Across America is founded by the National Education Association in coalition with Dr. Seuss Enterprises, LP and Random House.
