BBSNews 2016-01-05 — ALBUQUERQUE, NM – The IceQube synthetic ice rink in downtown Albuquerque’s Civic Plaza was a big hit this past holiday season luring thousands of skaters. The downtown attraction premiered during the 2014 holiday season when the City of Albuquerque brought a 30-foot by 20-foot rink to Civic Plaza for all to enjoy. In a partnership with SMG, managers of the Albuquerque Convention Center, the rink was free to use with the option of renting skates at a minimal cost. During its inaugural season in 2014, the rink brought in a total of 1,090 ice skaters over a 29-day period. This past July the City decided to expand this proven attraction by purchasing a larger rink measuring 80-feet by 55-feet, comparable to the famous rink at New York’s Rockefeller Center. Within a 10 day period, the brand new rink brought in 276 skaters. The City brought out the rink again during the 2015 holiday season and saw the excitement and enthusiasm grow to attract even more skaters to downtown Albuquerque. Within 38 days the IceQube saw 2,385 skaters enjoying this fun, family-friendly attraction. The rink finished out the holiday season with the New Year’s Eve on Civic Plaza Event that boasted almost 1,800 people in attendance.
