Palestine Shocker: PM Salam Fayyad Resigns, Abbas Accepts

Salam Fayyad.

Salam Fayyad.

According to news reports Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) has accepted the resignation of Salam Fayyad today. The two have been at odds since at least the resignation of the Finance Minister Nabil Kassis last month.

The widely regarded Fayyad is a technocrat credited with shepherding improvements in the Palestinian economy in the West Bank even with continued Israeli roadblocks literally, figuratively and ideologically.

The West claims to believe that Fayyad, a former IMF official was was educated in the West, was crucial to the so-called “peace process” – but there is no such thing as a “peace process” while Israel continues to steal Palestinian land and resources.

Internal wrangling over Palestine’s finance’s and Fatah have led to tensions in Ramallah but the over arching issue remains that negotiations with Israel will remained stalled while Bibi’s hard line government refuses to stop building illegal “settlements” on Palestinian land.

Fayyad will stay on as caretaker PM until a new government is formed.
