"Metabolically converted to normeperidine (causing excitation) or directly hydrolyzed to a water-soluble compound which is conjugated and excreted. Also excreted unchanged in the urine.
Narcotic -- stimulates brain opiate receptors. Vasodilatation caused by central suppression of adrenergic tone and histamine release. GI secretions and motility are decreased while tone is increased.
Toxicity Dependence, CNS and respiratory depression, seizures, nausea, vomiting, ileus, constipation, hypotension, bradycardia, peripheral vasodilatation, histamine release, increased intracranial pressure, miosis, urinary retention, biliary or urinary tract spasm, allergic reactions, drowsiness, clouded sensorium, antidiuretic hormone release.
