"Police arrested an estimated 734,498 persons for marijuana violations in 2000, according to Federal Bureau of Investigation's annual Uniform Crime Report...Today's war on drugs is really little more than a war on marijuana smokers," charges NORML Foundation Executive Director Allen St Pierre. "Enforcing marijuana prohibition costs taxpayers approximately $10 billion per year. This is a tremendous waste of national and state criminal justice resources, which should be focused on combating serious and violent crime, including terrorism."

B&W 2002-04-05 -- "What worries those that lobby for legalization of drugs is the fear that Americans will re-examine their drug use and realize that it may be more than just a personal choice."
Bensinger simply needs to look at earlier Illinois history for the answer to terrorists or violent thugs being funded by currently illicit drugs. When another drug, alcohol, was banned during Prohibition I there was a man known as Al "Alphonse" Capone. Capone was no stranger to murder or gangland violence. St Valentines Day Massacre is sadly just a very small incident in which Capone was implicated. Bombing small businesses, matter of factly having competition killed, corruption of various public officials etc. Hallmarks that Bensinger mentions plus a common thread between the two unmentioned is the charity that both men did in their communities. They were genuinely liked by people within their sphere who benefited from their largesse.
