Reuters/Zogby Poll: Obama Barely Retains Lead Over Clinton

Survey finds McCain would defeat both Obama and Clinton in latest prospective General Election match-ups

BBSNews 2008-03-21 -- (Zogby) UTICA, New York - Illinois Sen. Barack Obama has seen the 14-point lead he enjoyed over Democratic rival Hillary Clinton last month decline to just 3 points, with Obama winning 47% support to Clinton's 44% in a new national Democratic primary preference telephone survey conducted by Zogby International for Reuters news service. The survey was conducted late last week, and concluded just as the controversy over Obama's pastor was reaching full boil.

In the national Democratic primary race, Obama continues to hold a significant lead among younger voters, but among older voters his support is on less sure footing, as has been the case through the year. Last month, Obama enjoyed a wide 57% to 29% lead over Clinton among those likely voters age 50 to 64, but that lead has all but disappeared with Obama now leading by just a 2-point margin, 48% to 46%.

This latest poll also finds majority support from women has shifted back in Clinton's favor, 47% to 44%. In last month's survey, Clinton and Obama were deadlocked at 44% support from female voters. Obama still leads among men, 50% to 40%, but Clinton has gained significant ground since last month when Obama enjoyed 61% support from male voters, compared to 32% for Clinton.
