Oklahoma's Sally Kern: No Apology for "Not Gay-Bashing" Hate Speech

Kern now claims she received a GOP 'standing ovation' on speech that also called Islam a threat to the United States

Oklahoma State Representative Sally Kern, District 84 Republican.
Oklahoma State Representative Sally Kern, District 84 Republican. Best known, now nationally, for hate-speech and anti-gay legislation and anti-Islam rhetoric and she is apparently a darling of the state GOP.

BBSNews Editorial 2008-03-11 -- Does Senator John McCain, the presumptive GOP nominee, agree with Republicans who yesterday applauded Oklahoma State Representative Sally Kern's offensive speech against gays and Islam? No word yet, but when McCain yesterday declared himself "cancer free" he probably did not know that another Republican lawmaker from the heartland had a "cancer" of another kind on her mind and spilling from her lips when she compared gays to a cancer [of the toe no less].

Republicans have long been lumped with anti-gay bias, even though it seems a lot of them get accidentally get caught up in the "gay agenda" in airport bathrooms or outside Congressional page dorm rooms. And it's been reported that they have an unusual liking for episodes of Will & Grace.

According to the Oklahoman she has verified the remarks posted by the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund in a video release and she does not plan to apologize saying, "I said nothing that was not true, I said nothing out of hate and I don't believe my colleagues will censure me."

Given the GOP's history of extreme anti-gay rhetoric and outright war against equal rights and treatment under the law for America's Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender population she is, sadly, probably right. Many Republicans simply don't consider speeches like this "hate". And it's a sure bet that they won't likely touch her remarks about Islam. Simply reading the near-violent undercurrent in anonymous comments on right-wing news sites shows that there is a seething visceral hatred being fomented in America against Gays, Muslims and of course Hispanic immigrants.

It is an underbelly of fear and loathing and ignorance that must be rubbed by today's GOP candidates just to get elected, so they must throw out carefully couched anti-gay, anti-immigrant, and anti-Muslim "red meat" to satisfy it, and that is in itself a "death knell" - not for America - but for the Republican Party as it is currently presenting itself at every opportunity.

GOP Standing Ovation

In Tulsa world it was reported that during a closed (Is it any wonder?) Republican caucus meeting yesterday she related some of the "5,000" emails, apparently some with language she had "never heard before", to the attendees of the meeting, her Republican colleagues, and they gave her a standing ovation. Is it any wonder that so many Americans are finding that the Republican Party has become dinosaur-like and completely out of touch with the values of real people as opposed to those, like Sally Kern, who would force their narrow and twisted view of Christianity on the rest of the country?

She looks so sweet, like she could be serving a nice, fresh, hot out of the oven, batch of cookies and glasses of cold milk in a poignant scene from Middle-America. (Sure that sounds vaguely sexist, but look at her.) Looks however can be deceiving. Her confirmed remarks in the video presentation that has received hundreds of thousands of views so far, proves that this is no woman who values all American citizens equally.

When it comes to agendas there is no mistaking hers. Republican darling Sally Kern seeks to stop in its tracks any effort for fair representation of gays in government, and she takes a scathing view of them; and also Islam in the bargain.

This Oklahoma legislator, wife of Dr. Steve Kern, pastor of Olivet Baptist Church, shows that bigotry exists in the American heartland against not just one class but two classes of Americans, gays and Muslims.

This did not become a national issue because a gay rights group made a video presentation using her recorded comments. It became a national issue because of her calling out various other states, Arkansas, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Florida. She did so by claiming that various city councils in those states have been "infiltrated" by gays.

And this is an election year, a time when Americans will decide if they want real change or do they want a continuation of American domestic and foreign policy based upon some twisted version of evangelical values that have impeded and retarded America's progress and standing for more than seven years?

No word yet on whether John McCain supports these divisive and extreme remarks by Sally Kern, so we have prepared a full transcript of the remarks Kern made for his, and his campaign's, perusal:

Full transcript of a speech by Sally Kern on the "gay agenda" with a backhanded slap at Islam

The homosexual agenda [Loud snap] is destroying this nation. OK? It's just a fact. [Volume increases] Not everybody's lifestyle is equal, just like not all religions are equal.

You know, the very fact that I'm talking to you like this here today, puts me in jeopardy. OK? Uh and I'm not anti, I'm not gay-bashing, but according to God's word that is not the right kind of lifestyle, it has deadly consequences for those people involved in it, they have more suicides, uh and they're more discouraged, there's more illness, their uh lifespans are shorter, you know?

It's, it's, it's not a lifestyle that is good for this nation.

'Matter of fact, studies show, that no society that has totally embraced homosexuality has lasted more than, you know, a few decades.

So it's the death knell of this country.

I honestly think it's the biggest threat even, that our nation has, even more so than terrorism or Islam, which I think is a big threat. OK?

Because what's happening now, they're going after er uh in schools - two year-olds!

You know why they're trying to get early childhood education? They want to get our young children into the government schools so they can indoctrinate them! I taught school for close to twenty years and we're not teaching facts and knowledge anymore folks, we're teaching indoctrination. OK?

And they're going after our young children, as young as two years of age, to try to teach them that the homosexual lifestyle is the acceptable lifestyle.

You know, gays are infiltrating city councils.

Do you know? Eureka Springs [Arkansas], anybody been there, for the [Great] Passion Play? [A "Creation Truth" production] OK, have you heard that the city council of Eureka Springs is now controlled by gays? OK?

There are some others. Uh, Pittsburgh, Pa.; Tacoma, Md.; Kensington, Md.; in Vermont, Oregon, West Palm Beach, Fla. and a lot of other places in Florida.

What's happening? And they are winning elections. One of the things I deal with in our legislature, I tried to introduce a bill last year, that would notify parents, uh schools had to let parents know what clubs their students were involved in.

And the reason I did that bill, primarily, was this, we had the Gay-Straight Alliance coming into our schools.

Kids are getting involved in these groups, their lives are being ruined, their parents don't know about it. So I introduced a bill that said you have to notify all clubs, and things. And one of my colleagues said, "Well, you know we don't have a gay problem in my community, so that's why I voted against that bill."

Well you know what? To me that is so dumb. If you've got cancer or something in your little toe, do you say, Well you know I’m just gonna forget about it, 'cause the rest of you's fine?

It spreads! OK?

And this, this stuff is deadly, and it's spreading and it will destroy uh our young people, it will destroy this nation.

Remember Sodom and Gomorrah? No, you wouldn't or you would know that homosexuality is a sin. A sin of the worst kind. It is obvious that the people that have responded to this article have not had any kind of religious, moral or even academic education. Christians like Sally Kern DO NOT hate gays, they hate that the people that are living the gay life style have been deceived into thinking that it is ok or that it is a civil right. A time is coming soon when we will all know the truth. I just hope and pray that the true haters "that's you" not people like Sally Kern, see the truth before the fires of hell lick at your bodies for eternity.

"I just hope and pray that the true haters "that's you" not people like Sally Kern, see the truth before the fires of hell lick at your bodies for eternity."

I'm thinking your breaking at least two commandments right there, Exodus 20:16 and 20:17 respectively. So I'm just guessing, but I assume that you believe your place in the mythical place called "Heaven" is assured?

Given your obvious relish at the thought of gays having the "fires of hell lick at your bodies" - you don't seem like a very good candidate.

Unless of course your particular God rewards those who gloat about others having horrible things done to them for "eternity" just because you personally don't like them.

There are more than six hundred Gods or so to choose from, I'm sure those that care about such things can find one more to their liking that is not so mean-spirited and arbitrary.

If you would have thought it completely through, instead of parroting the usual anti-gay bigotry and religious mumbo jumbo, you might have realized that it would be quite illogical for a God that made Man in his own image to be mad at them for being just as He created them...

Or are you accusing God of having made a mistake in creating gay people? That does not seem like a good way to get a ticket to Heaven either.

And you probably forgot about that pesky US Constitution. The US is not a Christian theocracy, and it's not majority rule. The United States is a representative democratic republic with a written constitution that guarantees equal rights and treatment under the law for all; regardless of religion, and also for those us us who do not rely on an invisible sky daddy to tell us what to think and believe.

But I'm sure with your education you already knew all that...

"Is it any wonder that so many Americans are finding that the Republican Party has become dinosaur-like and completely out of touch with the values of real people as opposed to those, like Sally Kern, who would force their narrow and twisted view of Christianity on the rest of the country?"

Hmmm. How is it then that a solid majority of Americans oppose gay marriage? As you sit their railing away against the Republican Party, you forget that many, if not most, Americans agree at least in principle that homosexuality is morally wrong. No, they wouldn't agree that it's a greater threat than Osama Bin Laden's thugs, but they agree with her in principle. For instance, some 76% of her fellow Oklahomans approved a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage and voted for anti-gay President George W. Bush by a 2 to 1 margin. And a recent poll found that Oklahomans would vote for John McCain over Barack Obama by a margin of 57%-34% if the election were held today. Popular GOP US Senator Tom Coburn ran a very outspoken anti-gay campaign in Oklahoma and easily won. The truth is conservatism is probably even deeper in other southern states.

If this is the kind of acceptable talk in Oklahoma (where there seems to be very little opposition to her comments), is it any wonder that gay marriage remains a step too far in 'liberal' states like California, Oregon, Washington, Hawaii, New York and Maryland?

"How is it then that a solid majority of Americans oppose gay marriage?"

Did you know that until 1967 that some US States still prohibited marriage between blacks and whites? See Loving v. Virginia for the whole story...

As I wrote, the US is not "majority rule". Americans cannot simply vote away Civil Rights for a class of people they find objectionable. It's nothing but pure bigotry dressed up in religious language, and if you take the time to look up the particulars of the Loving case you will find almost the EXACT same kind of language used as the excuse just that short time ago in American history.

The facts is, gay marriage has no effect on anyone at all except the parties involved. The sky has not fallen in Massachusetts. Gays will have the full civil right to marriage in the none too distant future, and moral busybodies will not be able to do a thing about it.

No religious denomination is negatively affected by equal marriage rights for gays. There are two steps to most marriages in the US, getting a license and receiving state sanction, and then there is the choice of having a judge, or justice of the peace to perform the marriage, or a licensed or state sanctioned clergy member perform the service.

Religion need not even be involved at all.

And finally, on what you call a "solid majority" of Americans opposing equal marriage rights for gays is moving at break-neck pace towards almost half in favor, and half against.

It is conceivable that within the next year or so, the number will be a slight majority in favor.

Will you then change your mind based upon a poll? I think probably not given your touting of an opposition to gay rights.

The bottom line is that in the United States, Americans cannot vote away someone's Civil Rights. Hence the failed attempt at a Constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage.

you, my friend, are yet another example of a blind christian standing sturdy along their bible without knowing the background history, facts behind the pages, or ways in which it was put together. if you'd like, you can read about all of it: when the bible was actually canonized, why the excerpts of S & G were decidedly placed in the bible (AND THEY WERE "DECIDEDLY PLACED" BECAUSE A BUNCH OF MEN--IRENAEUS, ATHANASIUS, TO NAME A FEW-- HAD A BUNCH OF MEETINGS AND DECIDING WHAT AND WHAT NOT TO PLACE IN THE BIBLE BASED ON WHAT THEY FELT WAS IMPORTANT). of course i'm only getting my doctorate in biblical theory and the church during the early medieval period, so what do i know? of course you probably think that doctors on philosophy/history are out of touch and have lost their faith. you make true christians- christians who follow christ and don't put words in his mouth- you make them look like fools because people like you exist within their religious circles. i'm not even going to read this over or read your reply because i already know what's coming. it's easy to smell ignorance from a mile away....

ps - i have long, blonde hair. i have blue eyes. i'm getting my doctorate. i was a prom queen. i have many butch friends, and many gay, guy friends. we don't necessarily fit into your stereotypes, but you fit into ours: a person who thinks that the "protestant, christian work-ethic" means it's okay to discriminate and speak for your god. i hope your god is angry. but, i'm sure he'll be even angrier at the fact that you refused to come out of the closet and discriminate against gays instead of living your life in truth....

because only a biggoted homophobe would waste the energy that you've wasted in discriminating against a group of people who you don't. even. know.

It's good to know other people out there are also fighting the dark side of humans.

"LOVE IS LOVE".... Friend, from your first two posts, it's evident that you have no sense of what love really is. Physical lust, perhaps -- but definitely not love. Let's not confuse the two, OK?

"Let's not confuse the two..."

Love knows no gender. Sounds like the writer is quite correct. And it sounds like you are quite the condescending commenter.

Hatred and ignorance are afflictions that can be unlearned, I suggest you do so. Lust is a perfectly valid emotion and can exist within love, in fact, it's the spark that keeps many successful relationships together.

Of course, some people prefer to be led around by ancient religious dogma that should really have no more place in today's world than the equally mythical Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny.

If you've never made spontaneous love on a quiet beach, or surreptitiously in chest high water or in the back seat of a car, or in the deserted balcony of a dark theater, or in an airplane bathroom, or in a stalled elevator, or at the drive-in, or in the backyard, well, I feel very sorry for your loss.

If you deny your capacity to be lusty, that's so sad. Well, gotta go, the bountiful swaying of my lover's breasts has me all lusty, I think I'll give in to temptation and "sin" my little heart out, then I can get back to work with a sated lust and a lilt in my step.

I'll leave the puritanism to you and those of your ilk.

There are both homosexuals and homosexual lifestyle supporters in Oklahoma. I think that it's comical that so many people think Oklahomans are all white republicans that hang African Americans, stone "the gays," and then ride their horses into town for a drink at the local saloon. I have been raised in Oklahoma all of my life and Sally Kern doesn't represent me or any of my gay friends. I have never been in love with anyone of the same sex, but my mother raised me with the common sense that it takes to realize that sexuality does not define someone as good or bad. The best relationship that I have ever witnessed is that of my friend and her girlfriend. Also, to the best of my knowledge, they have never attempted to blow me, or anyone else up... They are more functional than any relationship that I've ever been in, that's for sure! Sally Kern is just a self righteous so-called "Christian" that believes what she thinks everyone wants to hear. That's not what Jesus taught, and she knows it.

We reserve the right to delete inane crap. Conflating lust with all manner of the world's ills could be a definition of inane crap.

Sexual lust is part and parcel of humanity, it's one mechanism that encourages the perpetuation and thereby the evolution of our species.

Stop trying to attach all kinds of baggage to it. It's just sex. Some portion of the population happens to be geared towards those of the same sex. Get over it. It has no effect on you.

Appealing to some imaginary skydaddy and an arbitrary set of rules will also get you no where fast.

Instead of cutting and pasting why not use your own mind and actually respond to comments as written in place of your pasted in nonsense.

The sin of Soddom (and also the point of this story in the novel) wasn't homosexuality, but that of gorging oneself selfishly and repeatedly while forgetting God. there just happened to be gay sex mentioned as well. when reading the Bible, it's important not to assume things just because other people tell you it's so (ie fundamentalists who take everything in the Bible literally/in the way they want); read it, think, "what does God want me to get out of this in MY LIFE (not others' lives, because really you have no right to judge anyone else's life as sinful)...what does this story mean to me?"
If you look at it from that perspective, hopefully the story of Soddom will take on a different meaning than ones wielded by traditional fundamentalists trying to cast gays as the greatest threat to the country. really, we're not that scary, and we have no 'agenda' other than to be seen as equal. Even if being gay was a sin, does that give the country the right to use religion (separation of church/state anyone...?) as an excuse to deny gays rights? Honestly, I think churches need to try to stay away from politicizing religion. Every religion is a valid set of beliefs, and no one person should have to suffer the loss of rights due to oppression in the name of a religion whose MOST IMPORTANT POINT is that you LOVE EVERYONE EQUALLY...oh look, equality....crap...well, jesus didn't mean gay people, did he??? There's a whole six verses in the Bible that reference homosexuality......obviously, due to this HIGH number, being gay is a horrible tragedy, so Jesus couldn't mean love gay people as much as straight people, could he?
Also, many of the 'sins' in the Old Testament were undone when Jesus came around...so unless you still slaughter sheep and refuse to touch a traditionally-made football, by your standards of 'sin' you most likely have been sinning continuously your whole life.

Genesis 19:8 "Look, I have two virgin daughters. Let me bring them out to you, and you can do with them as you wish."

Judges 19:25-28 "So the Levite took hold of his concubine and pushed her out the door. The men of the town abused her all night, taking turns raping her until morning. Finally, at dawn they let her go. 26 At daybreak the woman returned to the house where her husband was staying. She collapsed at the door of the house and lay there until it was light.

27 When her husband opened the door to leave, there lay his concubine with her hands on the threshold. 28 He said, “Get up! Let’s go!” But there was no answer. So he put her body on his donkey and took her home."

These, according to the Bible, were righteous men and pleasing to the Lord. In Genesis, Lot offers his virgin daughters to be raped by an angry mob. In Judges, the Levite offers his wedded concubine to be raped by a mob. In both accounts, the women were worth no more than throwing bread out of the door to keep the dogs from barking.

This is the kind of religion we wish to base a government upon? Societal mores should be based upon a book that says it is just fine to throw the innocent and defenseless away to be tortured and abused, just as long as the rest of us aren't disturbed?

These are just two examples. The "Holy Bible" is full of such stories that would turn the stomach of those with an ounce of compassion.

I do not believe that this is the sort of ethics or morals I would want in my government

Okay, a couple rules of thumb, if you will.

1. Love is universal.
2. There is nothing wrong with being gay. It's not a choice. "It's okay to be gay."*
3. Homosexuality is not a disease.
4. Love can't destroy a nation. It makes it stronger.

I feel sorry for you, because people like you go through life with such confusion and ignorance that they miss what's really beautiful in life. You have a lot to learn...

Yours truely,

Cam, Faith, Willow
