Bill Maher dragged through the mud by John Gibson from Fox and Newsbusters, the problem is, they lied...

BBSNews Commentary 2007-03-05 -- The right wing has done just what Bush did with Bin Laden, instead of staying the course with Bin Laden, they went after Iraq, and so it is with "conservatives" going after Bill Maher for what he did not say and ignoring what Ann Coulter actually did say.

Last year, Vice President Dick Cheney is welcomed before delivering the keynote address at the 33rd Annual Conservative Political Action Conference Dinner in Washington, Thursday, February 9, 2006.

This years photo is missing from the White House news site at the time of this writing, although the image description and dimensions are there, the photo is currently zero bytes. We currently have no further information as to why this years CPAC photo is missing.

It's just become so typical, simply ignore the gaffes by one of their own and instead go after someone else to deflect the heat from, in this case, the hysterical right-winger, Ann Coulter. It all started when Coulter insinuated that John Edwards is a "faggot" at the recent CPAC conference, she got rock star treatment, a standing ovation, and long lines to get a signed copy of one of her books.

So Newsbusters, an extremist right-wing blog that claims to expose "liberal media bias" published a hit piece on Bill Maher, misrepresented what he said to create a fake sensation, and then they have commenters go on and make the same kinds of comments that Maher was discussing saying they should be allowed. The kind of comments that were taken off of Huffington Post that supposedly expressed regret that Dick Cheney was not blown up in an "absurd" claim that Cheney was a target of an assassination in the first place (Cheney was not a target) suicide bombing at Bagram Air Force Base in Afghanistan. The difference is, Newsbusters is carrying comments that clearly say Bill Maher, CBS News and the New York Times and who knows who else that this "person" hates should have been killed by terrorists on 9/11, specifically by one "j17ghs" who has been a user on Newsbusters for a year and a half wrote:

"It's too bad that the hijacked 9/11 planes missed Maher and friends, associates and coworkers, er, co-conspirators (e.g. CBS News, NY Times, et al.)"

The actual truth is it's too bad Newsbusters does not exercise the same editorial restraint as Arianna Huffington... It's been there since March 3rd, and it is obviously not an oversight that this vile wish for Maher and others to have been killed is still there because there are many other comments there that we will not quote here, nor would we let stand here at BBSNews under any of our articles. (Yes, we delete them. It's our right to delete horrific comments and it's our call.) I'd guess that it's a good thing that currently such incitement is not considered "material support of terrorism" under this administration -- yet. There is still time for Bush to make war on Iran, and for his Republican GOP base to go after even more Americans for not being the kind of patriots that Ann Coulter and her ilk are.

Newsbusters headline said "Bill Maher Sorry the Assassination Attempt on Dick Cheney Failed."

Unfortunately for Newsbusters and their credibility, he said no such thing, and there was no attack attempt on Cheney anyway. Let's go to the transcript and see what Bill Maher really did say to correct the record and set the stage for even more incredible faux reporting by Fox News. From the transcript of Maher's show:

"MAHER: [overlapping] But I have zero doubt that if Dick Cheney was not in power, people wouldn’t be dying needlessly tomorrow. [applause]

RIDLEY: Okay, but—[voices overlap under applause]

SCARBOROUGH: But, let’s talk – let’s talk about your show for a second, very quickly. If somebody on this panel said they wished that Dick Cheney had been blown up, and you didn’t say—

FRANK: I think he did. [laughter]

SCARBOROUGH: Okay, did you say--?

MAHER: No. No, I quoted that.

FRANK: You don’t? Oh, you don’t believe that?

MAHER: No, I’m just saying that if he did die—

SCARBOROUGH: [laughter] Okay, but if – oh, let’s just say—

MAHER: [overlapping]—other people – more people would live. That’s a fact."

As anyone can plainly see, Maher did not say he was sorry that the alleged "assassination" attempt on Cheney failed. They simply made it up.

But wait! There's more!

John Gibson of Fox News jumped in today and enhanced this false claim saying twice:

"He did say millions of people wouldn't die if Cheney were dead, so one can logically conclude he wishes Cheney were dead, because he could not possibly wish that millions of other people would die."

Nope. Maher said no such thing. There is no "Coulter vs. Maher." It's a made up straw man argument by Gibson and straw man burning. Gibson needs to apologize to Maher and to his viewers for making such a false claim, Maher said if Cheney "was not in power" people would not be dying needlessly (in Iraq) and Maher is quite correct. Saddam Hussein was in a box and he could not so much as light up an American or British fighter without getting the immediate smackdown he so richly deserved for making aggressive moves against those enforcing the original sanctions that came about after the honorable Bush senior and his truly necessary intervention to stop Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. If Bush junior had gone after Bin Laden and really "stayed the course" and got him, he would be king of the world and there probably would be a movement to amendment the Constitution not to discriminate against gay Americans, instead it would have been to allow a president to serve a third term.

Today's so called "conservatives" have an extremely hard time telling the truth. Rational and thinking Americans should demand the facts and point out each and every falsehood that these so-called "conservatives" utter in their desire to try and hold onto their misguided "base" at any cost. Otherwise these "conservative" folks are going to get us all killed.
