Ann Coulter, a 'Beltway cocktail-party joke' and yet a conservative icon
BBSNews Commentary 2007-03-04 -- Most mainstream media is ignoring the disaster Ann Coulter has become for the conservative side of politics in the United States even as the recent CPAC audience cheered her on as their fearless star. It matters not about any gasps from the audience, CPAC had to have known she was going to say something even more outrageous than she had at last years gathering of America's leading "conservatives" as they certainly had fair warning.

Ann Coulter is a popular Google Image, with 36,500 images at the time of this writing, and most of them are by outraged Americans who are fed up with her brand of vulgar and divisive rantings and ravings.

Lots of ink and cyber type has been spilling forth on Coulter's remarks about John Edwards. So we won't spend too much time on her, she is simply not worthy of much notice in and of herself. What is noteworthy is how today's "conservatives" (who are not really conservatives at all, real conservatives have concerns about real issues not stupid red herring issues such as gay marriage or abortion).
Amy Ridenour at the National Center for Public Policy Research blog summed up the issues with Coulter and her antics:
"It would be better, in my opinion, to not have a CPAC at all than to have one that presents conservatism as a hostile, people-hating ideology. We conservatives have enough trouble overcoming the false things that are said about us without paying for a platform upon which we shoot ourselves annually in the foot."
The Center was even toying with the idea of pulling their co-sponsorship of the event because of Coulter's remark at last years event that illustrated her willingness to denigrate those of Middle Eastern descent, "Ann Coulter's 'raghead' comment." Amy Ridenour, also to her credit, pointed out a challenge to today's so-called "conservatives" about Ann Coulter yet she sullies the point by calling the writer Steve M. of the No More Mister Nice Blog, a "hostile liberal blogger" who as far as I can tell is no such thing.
Steve M. made the following observational challenge about Ann Coulter to todays "conservatives" everywhere:
"She is your biggest star. The people you claim to speak for feel she speaks for them much, much more than you do -- and they're right. She is modern conservatism's id -- she's the one who says what the rest of you would say if you didn't feel it would cost you your standing as reasonable, responsible people.Want to prove me wrong? You cut her off. You boycott the sponsors of TV shows that still invite her on as a guest. You show up at her book signings and campus appearances and hand out flyers quoting her nastiest bon mots. You boycott CPAC next year if she's invited, and demand that others do the same. Or if you have a problem with boycotts as a matter of principle, at the very least urge your fellow conservatives, on college campuses and elsewhere, to stop extending invitations to her, given the profound harm you say she does to your movement.
But you won't do that, will you? In that case, shut the hell up, hypocrites, and acknowledge that while Coulter may be the bad apple in the family, your door is always open to her."
Steve M. dismisses the disclaimers by "conservative" bloggers who claim to not support Ann Coulter's personal and highly inflammatory attacks as do we. And the political candidates claiming distance from Coulter just won't be able to wash off the horrible stench of bigotry and small-mindedness that Coulter exudes from every pore of her personality. And neither will CPAC. Ever.
We would like to add to the challenge.
If Ann Coulter has the courage of her convictions she should tell Eric Alva, the very first US service member wounded in Bush's War on Iraq that he is a "faggot" and he does not deserve equal rights and protection under the laws of the United States that he swore to defend and went on to lose a leg over.
Judging by the myriad other horrible things that this woman has said about what she calls "liberals," it's quite plausible that she would have no problem insulting Eric to his face.
The question is, would today's crop of so-called "conservatives" even notice or care?
