Otherwise with no Hippie Anti-War Movement as Foils, They'll be Left Holding the Bag
BBSNews Analysis 2007-01-10 -- Ted Kennedy (D-Ma) is making a point for the Democrats that needs to be made but if anyone thinks his legislation requiring Congressional approval before sending more troops has a chance of truly being meaningful they would be wrong. The most obvious reason would be because it is likely unconstitutional, and there is a war on in Iraq after all, (and to a lesser extent in Afghanistan and now Somalia for the first time since Black Hawk Down), regardless of the botched way it was started and has been run.

The New York Times is reporting that the Democrats will hold "symbolic" votes on the US led Iraq War and House leaders will hold a meeting this morning on whether to interrupt their 100 hour agenda and take up the impending surge of troops in Iraq. Democrats should not even have the meeting. They should simply continue on with their stated agenda, while giving honest feedback to the media about supporting the troops. Democrats should listen to Joe Biden; this US War in Iraq is George W. Bush's war. It is driven by the neocon ideology that has trumped every fact on the ground and every pre-invasion warning that the intelligence was simply not strong enough to support the stated assumptions for going to war and during many of the operations thereafter. These are the people, the "lifers," who believe that the Vietnam War could have been won if it just wasn't for those darn pinko hippies getting in the way and turning Americans against the War in South East Asia.
This time the Democrats will not be able to point to a fringe element and move to the "center" du jour. Cindy Sheehan is looking pretty lonely down in Cuba. Her appearance with Hugo Chavez was met with even less enthusiasm throughout much of the socio-political spectrum in the United States.
For Democrats to finally leave the "cut and run" legacy behind them, no matter how much undeserved such a moniker is for those such as John Murtha, the GOP and their flight-suit wearing, "mission accomplished" and "bring it on" leader President Bush must continue to own this war. The Republicans and their neocon base must be the ones who play out the war until the end of Bush's second term.
Fact: Iraq is an Islamic Theocracy
As we have previously reported, very few media outlets are paying attention to some of the "connect the dots" fundamentals that the US is fomenting in the Middle East region. The Iraqi constitution provides that no law shall be enacted that contradicts Islam. Has anyone noticed that this means now predominantly Shiite rule in Iraq as compared to the recently hanged Saddam Hussein who ruthlessly ruled but was Sunni? Major media can truthfully say they have been reporting this for years but they have never made the connection clear between Saddam Hussein and his regime that was supported in many ways in the 1980's against Iran by the United States, including a visit by a special envoy of Ronald Reagan at the time, Don Rumsfeld as opposed to Iran.
The US War in Iraq has now fully accomplished the goals of Iran by creating a predominantly Shiite run theocracy, with Saddam now hanged and whatever else he would have had to tell the world now silenced by his barbaric death; Iran has now got what it wants. Simply handed to it by current and recent past US policy.
The United States could send 200,000 troops and not change the dynamic that has now been set in motion. Iran's goal of a sister nation that expands Iranian influence in an Iraq that is ruled by Islamic law and is now Saddam free is a dream come true.
Democrats must support Bush's continued escalation policy by not impeding him at all, and letting the GOP and the neocons once and for all have a complete lead in Iraq and let the chips fall where they may. The Republicans truly believe they can achieve "victory" and they are willing to spend even more American and Iraqi lives and many others to do it. Let them pursue their policy.
A warning from Bush about Democrats risking the credibility of the nation by ending the occupation of Iraq written about in todays Washington Post should be laughed off. How much of a bubble can a person live in to not notice the agreement made in Pakistan on border issues with certain local officials? Or the symbolic win of Hassan Nasrallah in Lebanon against a proxy war fought against Hezbollah by Israel that was really a hope by US planners for a decisive smashing of Syria and Iran's nose? What about US funding during the Palestinian elections that elected Hamas that was designed to change the outcome of the election to Abu Mazens's favor?
The reason the Saudi's are pulling out is because they are pissed. This would also be the reason that Hosni Mubarek is walking a tightrope in trying to actively comply with Human Rights groups demands but also keep control domestically in the face of what Muslims the world over are seeing as unchecked US agression that all seems to lead back to that pesky Israeli-Palestinian non-settlement.
That's the most important world conflict that has fomented for decades and that the US has neglected since Bill Clinton left office, peace be unto him. The so-called "road map" by Bush is a stale document that never started from a level playing field. Peace can be had if some sensible persons would simply take a look at the maps and the United Nations agreements and honestly state, today we all will start honoring previous agreements and we will pull ourselves back to our own property line.
In the end, either course is going to cost lives whether the Democrats try to imprudently intervene in US presidential perogative and try to impose either troop restrictions or cut funding in Iraq or on the other hand whether the neocons are allowed to play all their cards and are given full rein to "win" the US led War in Iraq.
Democrats must look to the future and let the GOP go on and "win" the US led Iraq War. They believe it can be done as in the past where those that were of the same ilk believed they could have won in Vietnam. This is Bush's Vietnam. Democrats today should let him and the Republicans show Americans once and for all that just a little more force will always solve the social problem.
