Test May Have Equaled 3.5 Magnitude Quake

BBSNews 2006-10-09 -- North Korea has claimed a successful underground test of a nuclear device. The South Korea News Agency Yonhap reported that the Korean Central News Agency, for the north made a statement that there was "no danger including leaks of radioactivity" and that the test was completely successful.

An earthquake event was also reported in North Korea's North Hamgyeong Province. The UPI reported on October 4th that the Korea Herald said the test was most likely to occur in Gilju in North Hamgyeong province and that the north had built a pit there.

In a preliminary report from the National Earthquake Information Center, part of the U.S. Geological Survey, the center reported that a 4.2 earthquake event had occurred in North Korea south of at 10:35:27 AM local time or 01:35:27 (UTC).

In a first official state reaction Yonhap also reports that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said that the test "would never be pardonable."

CNN is reporting that the US government has not yet officially confirmed the report, but that they did expect that the reports would turn out to be true.
