Texas GOP Party Platform Planks Nailed

TFN via BBSNews 2006-06-09 -- AUSTIN – The platform approved by Texas Republicans last weekend once again demonstrates that their party is firmly under the control of extremists determined to use politics to divide people of faith, the president of the Texas Freedom Network said today.

"There seems little doubt that we will continue to see religious extremists in the Republican Party use politics to divide people of faith in Texas," TFN President Kathy Miller said. "And they will continue to belittle the faith of anyone who dares to disagree with them."

A TFN analysis of the 2006 state GOP platform shows that Republicans renewed their attacks on constitutional protections for religious freedom, public education and science, and the civil and equal rights of all Texans, especially gay and lesbian families.

The party once again declares the United States is a Christian nation, calls the separation of church and state a myth and promotes measures that would essentially turn public schools into Sunday schools, Miller said.

"It’s clear that too many Texas Republicans remain confused about whether the GOP is a church or a political party," Miller said. "In their Texas, God is a fire-breathing Republican and the only people more unwelcome than illegal aliens here are people of faith who don’t share their own narrow religious point of view."
