An 'Illegal' Speaks Out: Carley’s Story Part Two

BBSNews Immigration Exclusive 2006-04-10 -- Today there were protests held all over the United States largely in favor of fair treatment of currently illegal workers residing in the country. Republicans are eyeing political loss of hispanic voters that they had been actively trying to court.

That is until the House of Representatives, mostly Republicans, passed a bill that would instantly create 12 million felons just waiting to be picked up. Thousands of protestors have been dogging the Republican effort to marginalize largely hispanic illegal immigrants. When a political party's ideas are mostly anti-people such as anti-gay, anti-women's rights, anti-civil rights, this is bound to elicit a fringe response that may in turn be violent. Reuters reported today that "Houston television reported that flyers had been distributed in the industrial suburb of Pasadena urging people to burn down the homes of illegal immigrants."

What follows is part two of Carley's story as told by her, she has agreed to share her story with our readers. Some editing has been done for clarity. This is one person's story about what it's really like as they say 'on the ground' and she should know, she is the illegal immigrant after all:

My husband had had health problems for four years and could not prove he made $15,000 for 2 years in a row, and even on the immigration paper work it asked me if I've ever worked in the USA, I said yes because my lawyer told me to tell the truth. My lawyer never showed up for the first appointment, he took the money and ran so by the end of the second interview she told me we were getting denied because my husband could not prove he made X amount of money for 2 years.

I reminded her well it states in my paper work I worked for those two years. She told me I can’t sponsor myself in the country. I said if it was that easy, I would have gotten my paper work done when I was 12!

So a couple months later I got a denial notice.

It states on the denial paper work if I want to appeal the decision it would have to be done by March 18, 2004. So I sent in the appeal and what ever paperwork I could send them.

A couple of months later I sent in a secondary sponsor but by June 2004 my work permit was expired. I reapplied in November 2005 for my work permit. Two months later I get a denial notice saying my case was closed and if I want my work permit I need to do my paper work over!

I was shocked.

I had to do research. I found out if they cashed the money order and they did. And I had ‘signature required’ when they get the package and I got the signed part back.

So I called immigration about my case. The first person I talked to told me my file wasn't there and to call this number to see if they have it. I didn't get a person, I got a recording, I called back. The second person didn’t even help me, she just was rude.

I spent a lot of money to be shafted and I'm mad so now I have to go in on an information pass to find out what is going on with my case and the last time I was there it was a five hour wait and I didn't get any of my questions answered. The immigration officer told me next time just to call and I told him I did. And I still never got anything answered. So the last time I called, no one could tell me anything about my case and we are in 2006. So, it’s been two and a bit years and I can’t say what my status is here in America. No one can tell me anything about my case.
