Hillary Clinton, Spitzer Light Years Ahead of Republican Opponents
Zogby via BBSNews 2006-03-04 -- U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton holds a strong 54% to 33% lead over Republican challenger John Spencer of Yonkers and similar advantages over others, and leading Democratic gubernatorial candidate Eliot Spitzer is far outpacing all Republican rivals, a new Wall Street Journal/Zogby Interactive survey shows.

Even Thomas Suozzi, the Nassau County Executive who is trailing Spitzer badly in the Democratic primary battle for governor, leads Republican candidates Bill Weld, former state Assemblyman John Faso, and Secretary of State Randy Daniels.
In what could be the most troubling news for the state GOP, the survey found that Democrats hold a 27% advantage over Republicans in the generic congressional match-up, which asks likely voters for which party's congressional candidate they intend to vote. And while 49% of respondents statewide said congressional Democrats in Washington better represent their values, just 30% said Republican congressional leaders match their values.
Thinking of which party's state leaders best represent their values, 50% said Democrats, while 28% said Republicans.
The survey showed that President Bush also wins low marks in New York -- less than 30% gave him a positive job approval rating, and out-going Gov. George Pataki now finds his job approval rating in the low 30s.
Such poor ratings could affect races this fall for some congressional seats across the state, including in the 24th District, where moderate Sherwood Boehlert is retiring, leaving the seat up for grabs. Another reflection that the GOP is in trouble: Democrats hold significant leads over Republican Jeanine Pirro in a key down-ticket race for state attorney general,
