Leading the Lemmings with WMD

Republican Strategy Based on Childhood Adage

BBSNews Editorial 2005-11-04 -- Remember when Mom or Dad intoned that "two wrongs don't make a right" when refereeing a fight between siblings? A common refrain would be, "I only pulled his hair because he pulled mine first." A usual followup to later similar teenage romps would be the old story of "everybody was doing it" that a teenager would attach to pulling a prank or getting into some minor trouble as teenagers are prone to do.

And Mom would always say something like, "If Tommy drove over a cliff would you do it too?"

Lemmings come to mind here as well. Mindlessly going over the cliff because all the others are doing it.

Jay Ambrose opined this week with respect to the stated rationale for the US waging war on Iraq, and that naughty democrat Harry Reid using an arcane senate rule to render the senate into a secret session:

"As Reid cannot be so stupid as not to know, many Democrats have publicly stated there were WMD in Iraq, among them John Kerry, Ted Kennedy, Bill Clinton and Madeleine Albright. This tale that the administration conjured up its data is either paranoid conspiracy-mongering or opportunistic dishonesty, none of which stopped Reid from a grandstanding play in which he didn't even bother to consult first with Senate Republican Leader Bill Frist. Not only is this virtually unheard of, but Reid himself endlessly whines that the White House does not sufficiently consult with him."

There's a sufficiently pesky problem that accompanies Jay's opinion. And that's the fact that neither John Kerry, Ted Kennedy, Bill Clinton or Madeleine Albright took the United States into war with a country that was not directly threatening us. The current Commander in Chief of the United States did that. With a lot of help from his second, vice president Dick Cheney.

It must be a republican talking point as it's creeping up everywhere.

Passing the buck is not supposed to be an option of a sitting administration. It seems ludicrous to claim that America went to war based upon what a bunch of democrats said in the past but that is exactly the line that the GOP seems to be putting forward. We went to war because the democrats, one look at the list of them shows them to be the usual suspects, said that Hussein was a bad man and probably had WMD and now that they have not been found the Bush administration is blaming the other guys for a war that it does not know how to get out of, a war that thousands of American troops have died in, to create an Islamic theocracy next to another Islamic theocracy...

Mom's adage keeps tugging away at American thought though.

Two wrongs don't make a right. And don't be a lemming.
