Editorial: Bush War on Terror Doctrine Becoming Threadbare
BBSNews 2005-10-06 -- President Bush gave a rousing speech today. At ten in the morning. He went on at length notably saying "Evil men, obsessed with ambition and unburdened by conscience, must be taken very seriously -- and we must stop them before their crimes can multiply."

I could not agree more and I must say I think that's a brilliant observation.
Given that president Bush and the GOP is currently besieged by scandals all over the administration; the Michael Brown FEMA episode with hurricane Katrina that is still largely unsolved and festering to a feverish infection; the American people and world finding out on live television over a four day period how badly prepared we are for a known and foreseeable threat - let alone a split-second surprise terrorist attack. And then [now former] House Majority Leader Tom DeLay being indicted for money-laundering...
And Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist being investigated for a Martha Stewart like stock transaction, the indictment of former White House official David Safavian, GOP insider and bagman Jack Abramoff currently under investigation by the Justice Department, the creation of an Islamic theocracy in Iraq won by American blood and treasure...
The tepid reception of the crony appointment of Harriet Miers to the United States Supreme Court [the last and best stealth move of Karl Rove], the testimony of the Judith Miller Times correspondent Judith Miller after a grueling 85 days in jail (and visits from such luminaries as John Bolton), Leandro Aragoncillo, a former White House staff member, arrested last month for allegedly using his top secret security clearance to download classified documents, the guilty plea by Lawrence A. Franklin for giving classified information to an Israeli embassy official and members of AIPAC...
And remembering Scott McClellan vouching personally on behalf of the Bush Whitehouse that Scooter Libby and Karl Rove were not involved in outing a CIA agent for political payback in the justification for the US-Iraq War. And that today it was also announced that Karl Rove would be testifying a fourth time before a special prosecutor for the Valerie Plame leak, this time without immunity. Even more indictments of administration officials may not be too far behind.
I was so totally taken aback when a few hours after the Bush speech, and the news about the "Bush brain" Rove was breaking, NYC subways were horribly under "credible" threat and a few hours after that, I was further informed by the Bush media machine that the "credible" information came directly from a recent raid of a terrorist hangout south of Baghdad, Iraq.
I was soothed knowing that president Bush had just hours earlier explained how the government was thwarting attacks and keeping America safe when he said:
"Overall, the United States and our partners have disrupted at least ten serious al Qaeda terrorist plots since September the 11th, including three al Qaeda plots to attack inside the United States. We've stopped at least five more al Qaeda efforts to case targets in the United States, or infiltrate operatives into our country."
Americans can feel safe that we are under such protection. Or we can remember what we and the world saw for ourselves during the first four days and beyond in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. A government willing to lay blame on the minority party for being smashed by a near Category 5 hurricane, and then being overwhelmed in dealing with it. And depending on a reasonable and prior to the event asked for response from the federal government as well.
And by the way, where is Osama Bin Laden?
