Mobile, Alabama Gets Help From Army Corps of Engineers

USACE via BBSNews 2005-09-02 - Mobile, Alabama -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District, under the direction of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will begin debris removal next week for seven municipalities and unincorporated areas in Mobile County. These municipalities are Citronelle, Mt. Vernon, Dauphin Island, Prichard, Satsuma, Creola and Bayou La Batre.

These communities requested corps assistance in removing debris through the State of Alabama Emergency Operations and FEMA.

This is similar to the debris removal mission that the corps performed last year after Hurricane Ivan. The Corps will remove debris from public rights of way.

Individuals are asked to sort hurricane debris by type such as building materials, vegetation (i.e., tree limbs, branches), appliances, and to set it by the curb. The corps is not authorized to work on private property.

“The mission will also include the removal of sand from eligible roads and rights of ways and placement of the screened sand back on public beach areas,” said E. Patrick Robbins, Public Affairs Officer. “Once details are worked out, a map and schedule will be released where our contractors will be working.”

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will oversee the work done under the debris removal contract that it has with Phillips & Jordan, Inc.

Small businesses or independent contractors can subcontract with Phillips & Jordan to help with the debris cleanup effort. Those who are interested in such work should go on line at http://disaster.pandj.com/primaries/subcon.html.
