NASA via BBSNews - 2005-08-06 -- A horizon-to-horizon plasma streak across the pre-dawn sky signals Space Shuttle Discovery's return to Earth on Monday. Amateur videographers and photographers can capture the event with tips provided by NASA imagery experts.
Following a successful 13-day mission to the International Space Station, Discovery is scheduled to land at 4:46 a.m. EDT, Monday back at its launch site, NASA's Kennedy Space Center, Fla.
Discovery's track takes it across the southern Pacific Ocean, Central America, Cuba and Florida's southwest coast en route to KSC.
As it begins interacting with the Earth's atmosphere, Discovery's speed creates a plasma shield of super-heated air, which stretches almost from horizon to horizon.
While NASA is not soliciting video from the public, the tips provide guidance for amateur astronomers to track Discovery's return home. The tips are available on the Web at:
