DURANGO, COLORADO – The Durango Herald reported on Sunday that Navajo filmmaker, Kody Dayish, was arrested on Saturday on charges of sexual assault while in Durango, Colorado attending the Durango Independent Film Festival.
The 29-year-old filmmaker from Shiprock, New Mexico – was in custody on suspicion of sexual assault in connection with an incident that occurred Friday. Dayish is being held on a $250,000 bond.
Prior to his arrest, Dayish’s short film, “Spared,” was shown at the film festival. The film tells the tale of “two Navajo families (that) face the struggle of bullying, suicide and domestic violence while working with one another.”
Joanie Leonard, executive director of the Durango Independent Film Festival, said Dayish’s film had already played its two scheduled showing times by the time event organizers were made aware of the allegations.
