STURGIS, SOUTH DAKOTA – With 35-mph winds hurling, a grass fire spread at the northwestern part of Bear Butte State Park late Saturday morning.
According to the Rapid City Journal, by 11 p.m. the fire had burned an estimated 150 acres, primarily in dry grass on the northwest side of the butte, and was 30 percent contained. Ray Bubb, Incident Commander, State of South Dakota Fire, said that dozen lines around the blaze were nearly complete and fire crews were making good progress at 11:30 p.m. Saturday.
Residents near the fire were not required to evacuate.
