Three people were airlifted to a hospital in Miami Thursday afternoon after a small plane crashed in Marathon, authorities said.
Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin said four people were aboard the Piper PA-32R when it crashed in a wooded area on the back side of the Marathon airport.
She said the plane caught fire, but the flames were quickly extinguished.
Herrin said two people were taken as trauma alerts to a hospital in Miami.
"There should be no impact on air traffic into and out of the airport," she said.
The Florida Highway Patrol responded to the scene to investigate.
No other details were immediately released.
