WASHINGTON – The U.S. Senate failed to pass legislation to avert a federal shutdown late Friday night. As the result, a midnight the federal government ran out of money to operate.
The Senate failed to garner the 60 votes needed to pass the legislation. The Senate remained in session past midnight with Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) and Charles E. Schumer (D-New York) each blaming each other’s party for the federal government shutdown.
This is first the government has been shutdown since 2013. Even though, the Republican party controls both the White House and both houses of Congress, the leadership has proven they cannot govern. The leadership appears to be in disarray .
