Wounded Allapattah barbershop owner who fatally shot man claims self-defense

Serban Beriguete, the owner of the Copperstown Barbershop in Miami's Allapattah, was recovering from stab wounds to the stomach at Jackson Memorial Hospital Friday.

Beriguete, 44, pulled out a gun and fatally shot the man he said attacked him about 11 a.m., Thursday. In seconds, his daughter Jennefer said his business at 2060 NW 22 Ave., turned into a crime scene.

She said her dad was washing his hands when a man used a blade to attack him and he shot him to defend himself and the others in the barbershop. Melany Beriguete, who is married to Beriguete, said they were still trying to figure out what happened.

The Miami Police Department did not identify the man who died pending family notification. Detectives were asking anyone with information to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
