Gov. Rick Scott calls for special election to fill Rep. Daisy Baez’s swing House District 114

Gov. Rick Scott signed an executive order Thursday calling for a special election for District 114 of the Florida House of Representatives.

Rep. Daisy Baez, D-Coral Gables, resigned last week and was forced to abandon her Democratic race for Florida Senate District 40. She plead guilty to perjury Wednesday for lying on a voter-registration form, and in exchange she agreed to pay a $1,000 fine, complete an ethics course and a year of probation.

Without Baez, Democrats only have 40 members in the 120-member Florida House. Baez was elected in November. The Miami Herald reported in May that she was not a resident of the district that she was representing.

The special primary election will be held Feb. 20 and a special election will be held May 1, according to the Supervisor of Elections in Miami-Dade County.
