Wheelchair user killed in hit-and-run crash in Miami

A wheelchair user died after she was struck by a vehicle Wednesday in Miami, authorities said.

The hit-and-run crash was reported about 7 p.m. at the intersection of Northeast Second Avenue and 62nd Street.

Witnesses told police that a dark-colored, four-door vehicle fled the scene after striking the elderly woman who was in an electric wheelchair. 

Police said the victim, identified as Magarett Ruiz, 83, was taken by Miami Fire Rescue to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where she died a short time later.

The vehicle is believed to have front-end damage.

Anyone with information about the driver is asked to call Miami police or Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
