SWAT teams responded to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday after an armed man barricaded himself inside a room.
The unidentified 38-year-old man, who was a patient at the hospital, had made threats to hurt himself with a knife, which prompted the hospital's staff to contact an on-duty officer, Fort Lauderdale police said.
When police arrived, the man had locked himself inside the fifth floor room.
A large police presence was seen outside the front entrance of the hospital at 1600 S. Andrews Ave. However, only the fifth floor of the hospital was under lockdown.
After a standoff, negotiators were able to talk to the man on the phone and he surrendered peacefully to police.
The man suffered self-inflicted superficial wounds from the knife, police said, and was taken in under Florida's Backer Act.
