Two people died Sunday morning in Pompano Beach after a Tri-Rail train struck a car that was on the tracks, the Broward Sheriff's Office said.
The crash took place at about 9:20 a.m. near Andrews Avenue and Martin Luther King Boulevard.
"I was outside and I heard a boom and my son said 'You hear that?' and I said 'Yes,'" Mina Gonzalez said. "We went over there to try to save people but it was too late."
It is unclear how many passengers were in the car at the time of the crash, deputies said.
Atlantic Boulevard was shut down for hours, traffic was rerouted and trains were temporarily halted along the line as deputies worked the scene.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
