US will miss first World Cup since 1986

The United States has been eliminated from World Cup contention for the first time since 1986, The Associated Press reported Tuesday.

The shocking loss at Trinidad ended the Americans’ streak of seven straight appearances.

Twenty-eight years ago, a US victory at Trinidad put Americans back in the World Cup after a four-decade absence, the AP said. But now their chances for next year’s tournament in Russia are over.

Trinidad and Tobago scored a pair of first-half goals and eliminated the United States with a 2-1 defeat.

The 28th-ranked Americans needed just a tie against 99th-ranked Trinidad, which lost its sixth straight qualifier last week, the AP reported.
