Amid an effort to recover from Hurricane Irma in the Florida Keys, three men were sharing a trailer in Stock Island. It was a hot day and a little after 3 p.m., Friday, there was a fight that blew up into a bloody mess.
The man who was sleeping in the back of the trailer told Monroe County Sheriff's Office deputies that he heard screaming. Manuel Garcia and the other man he was allowing to sleep in the trailer were outside.
"He said the two had been arguing on and off all week," sheriff's spokeswoman Becky Herrin said.
Garcia, 77, was holding a 10-inch filet knife when Lt. Donnie Catala and Deputies John Allen and Wendy Negron arrived. The 66-year-old victim was bleeding from cuts to his hand and chest.
The victim told deputies Garcia told him to leave and attacked him. He said he first cut his hand while trying to defend himself, but Garcia was so aggressive he was able to stab him in the chest.
Fire Rescue personnel took the victim to the hospital, where he was treated and released. Garcia faces an aggravated battery charge and remained in jail Saturday morning.
