New Tropical Storm Maria threatens Leeward Islands

The National Hurricane Center was monitoring Hurricane Jose, Tropical Storm Lee and Tropical Storm Maria in the Atlantic Ocean.

The Saturday afternoon advisory warned Tropical Storm Maria was expected to strengthen into a hurricane and approach the Leeward Islands early next week. It was also forecast to affect Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

The rain the storm will bring will be capable of causing life-threatening flash floods and mudslides. Residents in the area were still recovering from the damage of Hurricane Irma.

Neither of the three storms presented an immediate threat to South Florida. The hurricane season ends Nov. 30.
