All Miami-Dade County Public Schools will be closed until further notice
Superintendent Alberto Carvalho made the announcement Sunday on Twitter.
Carvalho cited the difficulty in making school inspections for possible damage for leaving an open-ended return date.
As Hurricane Irma pounded South Florida, leaving thousands of customers without electricity, Carvalho said all 42 school shelters have generators. He said there are mechanics at each site to address any issues in case the generators fail.
Carvalho said further announcements about when schools will reopen will be made based on shelter closures, school site inspections and workforce readiness.
