A Miami-Dade Police Department officer shot an armed man Thursday night at Miami International Airport.
The man was armed with a knife and was trying to get to the roof at Terminal J on the southeastern side of the airport.
"The scene is secure," Miami-Dade police said on Twitter about 10:20 p.m., after police officers at the scene said the danger was contained to an area of the terminal.
Witnesses said the person appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and was acting erratically.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Lt. Felipe Lay said the wounded man was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center.
MIA was busy amid a rush to leave South Florida to avoid Hurricane Irma. With many flights canceled and long waits to board flights, there was plenty of stress at the airport.
Marc Henderson, a spokesman for the Miami-Dade Aviation Department, said there were 114 cancellations Thursday -- 61 arrivals and 53 departures. The airlines affected were American Airlines, Air France, American Eagle, PAWA Dominicana, Santa Barbara Airlines, Silver Airways and Bahamasair.
The Category 5 storm was impacting Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Turks and Caicos and other islands in the Caribbean. It will be aiming for Cuba before turning toward South Florida this weekend.
