Miami-Dade County will begin evacuations as early as Wednesday ahead of a possible arrival of Hurricane Irma.
Mayor Carlos Gimenez announced evacuations for Zone A and B may begin as soon as late Wednesday or Thursday.
Special needs evacuations will start Wednesday morning.
Shelters will be open starting Wednesday evening, but the mayor urged residents to use shelters only as a last resort.
While evacuations are mandatory, Gimenez said police will not be going door-to-door to check on residents who refuse to leave their homes.
All county officers will be closed Thursday and Friday.
Gimenez urged all visitors to cut their vacations in South Florida short and make plans to leave the area ahead of the storm.
Miami-Dade Public Schools Superintendent also announced schools will be closed Thursday and Friday.
