The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating after a Miami-Dade police officer was involved in a shooting that left a teenager dead Tuesday morning.
The Miami-Dade Police Department said the officer was working a burglary saturation detail when he approached a male teen at a nearby park.
Police said the teen ran, the officer chased after him and the pursuit ended in the parking lot of the Spanish Villas Community.
Sometime during the incident, the officer discharged his electronic control device, police said, adding that the teen, who was armed with a knife, lunged at the officer, who then fired his weapon and struck the teen.
When Miami-Dade Fire Rescue arrived at the scene, the teen was determined to be dead.
Police said the officer, who was not injured, has been with the department for slightly more than a year.
