Man dead, another injured in North Lauderdale hit-and-run crash

A man died Saturday night after he and his cousin were struck by a vehicle during a hit-and-run in North Lauderdale.

Alex Cheguen-Reyes, 34, and Jerson Morataya-Cheguen, 23, were crossing a road at about 10 p.m. Saturday near the 5300 block of State Road 7 when an unknown vehicle struck them, the Broward Sheriff’s Office reports.

Witnesses told deputies that the driver slowed down after the impact but then continued southbound as the pedestrians lay in the roadway.

After the crash, the driver of a GMC Sierra pickup saw the victims and attempted to swerve away, but wound up running over Cheguen-Reyes, deputies said.

The driver of the pickup, Eugene Battaglio, remained at the scene.

Both  victims were taken to Broward Health Medical Center where Cheguen-Reyes was pronounced dead, and Morataya-Cheguen remained in critical condition.

BSO's traffic homicide detectives are investigating.
