5 students injured in Miami-Dade school van accident

Five children were were injured Monday when a student transportation van was involved in an accident in a Southwest Miami-Dade neighborhood.

Sky 10 was overhead as the van registered to "Happy Kids" was on its side on the sidewalk at 18115 Southwest 105th Avenue.

The driver of the van says she was hit by a car that ran a stop sign. 11 students from Terra Environmental Research School were on board the van at the time of the accident.

Six people were transported to the hospital, five of those were students.

None of the injuries are considered life-threatening.

"Upon arrival it was total chaos," Cpl. Leonel Reyes of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue told Local 10's Ian Margol. "Kids, people running all over the place. We were able to calm the situation, sit everyone down."

The other injured person was the driver of the other car involved in the collision.

The accident comes as schools in Miami-Dade and Broward counties opened for the year.

Roads near the accident have been closed off and people are being advised to avoid the area.
