Teen killed, 4 others injured in I-95 crash in Fort Lauderdale

A teenager was killed and four others were injured in a crash late Wednesday night on Interstate 95 in Fort Lauderdale, police said.

The car was traveling north on I-95 at about 11:45 p.m. when the driver somehow lost control of it and crashed on the exit ramp to State Road 84.

Photos taken at the scene show that the engine was separated from the car and part of the vehicle flew down below onto I-95.

A 17-year-old boy in the car was pronounced dead at the scene. Four other teenagers in the car were taken to Broward Health Medical Center.

The father of the teen who was killed identified his son as Letroy Martin Jr., who was driving the car.

His father said Martin was about to start his senior year at Fort Lauderdale High School and had aspirations of going to college.

"I was just asking him about if he's ready for school, and what his plans are and did he have everything that he needed. That was basically it. It was a short little two minute conversation -- that's all," Letroy Martin Sr. said.

The father said investigators told him that speed was a factor in the crash.

Letroy Martin Sr. said his son's cousin and two young ladies were in the car with him.
