SANTA FE – The Institute of American Indian Arts’ (IAIA) Low Residency MFA in Creative Writing program presents The 2017 Summer Readers Gathering — July 22 – 29, 2017. Readings will take place each night beginning at 6:00 pm in the Auditorium in the Library and Technology Center (LTC) on the IAIA campus — located at 83 Avan Nu Po Road, eight minutes from the intersection of Rodeo Road and Richards Avenue, on the south side of Santa Fe. Participating in the gathering this year are noted authors Sherman Alexie (Spokane/Coeur d’Alene), Stephen Graham Jones (Blackfeet), Carolyn Forché, and Rebecca Solnit — as well as IAIA MFA faculty writers Ramona Ausubel, Marie-Helene Bertino, Sherwin Bitsui (Diné), Kimberly Blaeser (Anishinaabe),Jennifer Foerster (Muscogee (Creek) Nation of Oklahoma), Santee Frazier (Cherokee), Geoff Harris, Pam Houston, Toni Jensen (Métis), Joan Naviyuk Kane (Iñupiaq), Chip Livingston (Creek), Migizi Pensoneau(Ponca), Ismet Prcic, James Thomas Stevens (Akwesasne Mohawk), and Ken White. Additionally, recent IAIA MFA graduates and new faculty members Terese Mailhot (Seabird Island Band) and Tommy Orange(Cheyenne/Arapaho) will also be reading.
Each day of the gathering (except Saturday and Sunday, July 23 an 24), at 1:00 pm in the IAIA Library, the Second Year MFA students will be doing readings which will be open to the public.
Rebecca Solnit will be doing a talk: Selvage and Suture: Private Selves and Public Lives in the CLE Commons at 2:00 pm on Friday, July 28. There will also be several film screenings taking place: Jeff Barnaby(Mi’kmaq) will be showing Rhymes for Young Ghouls, IAIA MFA Alumna (’15) Ramona Emerson (Diné) will be screening The Mayors of Shiprock, and Sarah Del Seronde (Navajo) will show Metal Road. Mgizi Pensoneau (Ponca) will show his short film, Believer.
MFA Director Jon Davis says of this year’s Summer Readers Gathering: “These writers will transform and delight, entertain and inform, enthrall and perhaps even terrify. I expect the whole range of human experience in a setting that encourages a comfortable interchange, and sometimes outrageous banter, between audience and author.”
