SANTA FE – The Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) announced on Monday that it has reached an agreement with San Juan College (SJC) of Farmington, New Mexico to allow their students who have attained their Associate of Applied Science degree (AAS) in Digital Media Arts and Design (DMAD) to be admitted to the IAIA Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Cinematic Arts and Technology Program.

Students who have graduated with a 2.0 cumulative grade point average or higher, have the advantage of transferring all credits earned in San Juan College’s DMAD program toward a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with IAIA. Obtaining a bachelor’s degree will enhance and further their career opportunities in the film industry.

According to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, careers for film and video editors, as well as camera operators, are expected to grow 11 percent between 2014 and 2024. As one of the fastest growing occupations nationally, this increase can be attributed to the ever-expanding technology and content delivery methods being offered through mobile devices and online TV.

“We are excited about this new partnership with IAIA and the opportunity it will provide our students,” said Dr. Toni Hopper Pendergrass, president of San Juan College. “San Juan College holds the distinction as second in the nation for granting associate degrees to Native American graduates, and this partnership with IAIA furthers opportunities and provides unique pathways for students to continue their education and secure a rewarding career.”

Additionally, IAIA has been approved to begin teaching a 300-level film course on the San Juan College campus.  Details on the specifics of the course are still being finalized, but it is expected to launch at the beginning of the Fall 2017 semester.
